As I continue to read The Kite Runner, I continue to see the unconditional love that Hassan has for Amir, but I am not sure that Amir shares that same love for Hassan. Besides the constant jealousy that Amir has for Hassan, there are moments in the novel where you can truly tell how innocent Hassan is, and how pure his love for Amir is, while Amir takes every chance that he can to make Hassan seem like an idiot by playing little jokes on him just to make himself seem superior to him.
Hassan is Amirs servent, but he is truly a brother to Amir and constantly reminds him how he would do anything just for him. Hassan doesnt just say this to please Amir, when the time comes, Hassan actually steps up to protect Amir or help him out. For example, when Assef pulls out his brass knuckles on Amir, Hassan does not hesitate to aim his slingshot at Assefs face in order to protect his best friend, regardless of how frightened he may be. On another occasion, Hassan is caught in the middle of Assef and his friends, and no matter how much Assef threatens Hassan to give him Amirs kite, Hassan refuses to give it to him, knowing how much it means to Amir, and bears with the punishment given to him by Assef. Amir runs to find him, and is to much of a coward to step up for his loyal friend which is bearing this unreal, cruel punishment because of him.
Amirs whole life changes in that moment. He is too much of a coward to step up and protect Hassan, and he knows he will carry that guilt with him forever. I honestly hated reading this part of the book. Amir begins to ignore Hassan as much as possible, no matter how hard Hassan tries to play with him. Hassan is bearing so much pain, including pain inflicted by his very own brother that seems to suddenly want nothing to do with him. Amir transforms into a completely different character which I passionately hate. He continues to ignore Hassan and rejects every attempt Hassan offers to better their relationship, leaving Hassan to deal with his own problems all alone along with unanswered questions as to why his best friend can no longer stand the sight of him.
