Comment on Mikaela's Post
Though it is true that Amir is trying very hard to gain his father's love and attention, I do not believe that he is looking for punishment nor is he looking for retaliation from those he hurts. Instead, he might be trying to transfer his internal pain on to others by throwing rocks or pomegranates. This is how people who do not have the courage to tell anyone handle their pains. Also, I do not believe that someone like Amir is willing to feel punishment rather than living a lie. The reason as to why I say this is partly because he never really owns up to his mischievous acts but also because, instead of speaking with his father about the lack of love that he feels, he hides his feelings to impress his father. Therefore he can only live a lie. Now, the fact that he lives a lie can possibly be the reason as to why Amir might feel guilty and this probably explains why he commits his childish acts. He needs a way to express his anger and contempt and he does so through the physical pain he causes to others.
