Comment on Ben's post

As Ben pointed out, Hassan sees the world in a different viewpoint as everyone else. Hassan does not hold grudges and accepts everything. Amir has a many distortions affecting his judgment and the way he reacts while Hassan does not react but acts without thinking.
The way Hassan questions everything shows how curious he is about the world. He believes Amir when Amir explains what imbecile means. At the same time, Hassan is very insightful.  Without a proper education, Hassan can still pick up on small details that many people would not even think about. For example, after Amir reads Hassan his story, Hassan asks why the man did not just smell an onion to cry instead of forcing himself to be sad or killing his own wife. This question never occurred to Amir and did not occur to me when the story was described. This shows how even the simplest minds can come up with something extraordinary.

Hassan gentle nature only adds to his clarity. He does not try to hurt anyone who does not deserve to be hurt. When he attacks Assef with the slingshot, he does it to protect Amir because he feels that Amir would have done the same thing. Hassan acts on his feelings. He feels loyal to Amir so he sticks up for him and ends up being raped for Amir. These two scenes show his true personality. The way he perceives and acts shows how pure he is and how he is willing to do anything for the people he cares about.
