Comment on Jose's Post
I agree 100% with Jose. The way he describes his feelings toward Amir is the exact same way I feel about him. I am not able to morally accept what he did, to turn his back on his best friend during a sexual assault and run away is unacceptable. I couldn't agree more that I want Amir to feel guilty and to hurt internally with shame inside for what he did and for what he is currently doing. By not saving his best friend and then trying to exile him from your life, even asking your dad for new servants so that he does not have to deal with Hassan anymore and remember the scene and the shame, I can't respect him. Since the beginning of the novel Amir has constantly treated Hassan badly, with the exception of some positive moments such as the kite fighting competition, where they worked as a team and got rewarded for it. That is what happens when friends work together and accept each other in their lives, they win. However, when they don't, or at least one of them don't, events such as a rape on a back street alley happen, with no intervention from the friend. amir is losing Hassan little by little, and it is not because of Hassan, but because of himself. He knows how Hassan feels and even now does not intend to help. Things are going to start going downhill from now, the later he he speaks the truth and carries this shame on his back, his life will become miserable and no one will respect him, he will be known as the coward of Afghanistan.
