Amir Needs to Die

The distinction between the society that Amir and Hassan live in is made more and more apparent as the book continues. Amir, on one hand, comes from the select, privileged society of Afghanistan. Hassan, a “Hazara” is regarded as filth by most of society. Up until this point, I was under the impression that Amir was knowing, but above these ridiculous prejudices. They are virtually opposites in everything that they do; Hassan always the nicer of the two. I was honestly beyond disgusted with Amir in this last part of the book. Hassan could literally not be a better friend to Amir. They grew up together, even nursed from the same woman. I would have thought that this would have created some sense of fraternal bond between the two. In my opinion, only one of these brothers seems to be worthy of Baba’s affections and position in society and that is Hassan. Amir absolutely repulses me. The fact that he just sat and watched as he saw a group of bullies take down Hassan is despicable enough. Even more repugnant is Amir’s inability to save someone that he should consider a brother from a brutal gang rape. It makes me truly sad to read this book and see how pure-hearted Hassan is. He really is a great friend that Amir just does not deserve. Beyond the fact that Amir is an asshole, the rape of Hassan demonstrates to readers another aspect that has been occurring in the story, the discrimination of the Hazara people. The boy states that it was not sinful to rape Hassan because he is only a Hazara and not actually a person. The society in this time period looks at these people much like the Nazis did the Jewish. I can only predict that this book will entail the downfall of the Hazara people with an attempted genocide represented by Hassan. After the rape, Amir basically avoids Hassan for several weeks. Literally, what a dick. Amir needs to die honestly, I hate him. All that Hassan wants, after his friend watched him get brutally raped and did absolutely nothing, is for Amir to spend time with him and is left thinking that he did something wrong. I continue reading this story hating Amir more and more as each chapter passes. He is basically a pathetic excuse for the son that Baba wants, Hassan.
