I see Hassan and Amir as being brothers practically because
they are always together, love one another, and are both loved by Baba as if
they were both his sons. I see this as a character conflict because brothers
are always jealous of each other if something the other has is better than what
they have, and I know this from experience. Amir is obviously jealous of Hassan
because Hassan is the son that Baba would have liked to have. Hassan is
athletic, smart, caring, and stands up for himself, which are some of many
qualities Amir lacks strength in. Baba also shows more love and affection to
Hassan than Amir even though Hassan is the servant’s son. This could develop into a deep problem later
on because I feel that Amir will turn on the one person that loves him unconditionally
as a cause of his jealousy and destroy the bond that they have, which means losing
his beloved best friend. I really like Hassan because he represents everything
that’s good in a child and everything that Amir wishes to be. He’s honest and “pure”
and so it makes people like Amir realize that they can be fake, which can help
change that in the future. I like how humble he is and how he accepts his
future of being a hazara without getting sad about it or being mean to Amir for
being his future owner.
The book describes a kite runner as being someone that
chases those fallen kites, and that Hassan is the best at it, but I think being
a kite runner is a symbol for being someone’s seeker of something more than
just a kite. As for Amir, I see Hassan as being his kite runner for acceptance
into his father’s heart. Since Hassan is everything Baba wishes Amir to be,
spending time with Hassan may rub off on Amir and maybe Amir will learn how to
fit in to be what his dad wants him to be and finally get the love he’s been
yearning for. Amir says that the blue kite is “the key to Baba’s heart,” and
since Hassan is the one that chases it and gets it for Amir, I see Hassan
himself as being the key to Baba’s heart. Sooner or later, I feel that Amir
will realize this and take advantage of Hassan in some way.
