Ben makes a really good point of
the different personality types demonstrated by Amir and Hassan. Hassan acts
instinctively to protect the people that he loves. Amir is not confident in
anyone’s love so he is less assured in his actions. Amir, as Ben stated, reacts
instead of acts because of his constant hesitations about his feelings for
other people. If Amir was treated with love and respect from his father then
perhaps he would have been more confident in himself and his feeling. He, like
Hassan, would be able to analyze any situation quickly and act according.
Hassan was so loyal in fact that he was raped in order to protect Amir’s prize
kite. Was it worth it? Did a kite even matter? After Hassan gets raped, Amir
even looked to see if the kite had any rips on it. I would say that it is
becoming exceedingly difficult to like Amir. Ben wondered if Amir would protect
the kite for Hassan. Sadly, I am almost certain that the answer would be no. He
would not protect the kite for Hassan and he would certainly not take a beating
for him. Like Ben, I also wonder what is going to unfold in the rest of the
book. How will this horrible event affect both Amir and Hassan? How will their
relationship change? Will Amir be able to redeem himself? I have so many
questions that I hope the rest of the book will satisfy. Although, one thing is
abundantly clear, this event will change both of these two boys lives forever.
