Emily, I like how you classified Amir and Hassan as byproducts of their upbringing. I agree that it all comes down to nature versus nurture. Hassan's inherently good characteristics combined with a loving family made him grow up gentle and strong. Amir, on the other hand, who is not special by birth, is raised in an atmosphere of neglect and becomes self-centered and rash. The issue becomes a sort of vicious circle; Baba neglects Amir because he is self-centered and rash, and Amir only acts this way because Baba neglects him. Hassan, on the other hand, is always rewarded for his good deeds. Instead of trying to be good himself, Amir thinks the only way to gain his father's love is to tear down the competition.
When Amir sees an opportunity to impress his father by winning the competition, he puts all else aside for this one goal. He is only selfish and greedy because he is desperate for his father's attention.
