response to chow

I agreed with all of the points you made throughout your reaction, but I strongly disagree with the point you made about Amirs transition throughout the novel. I agree that at first he went out to save his nephew, Sohrab, in order to be "be good again" and relieve himself from the guilt and his haunting past. Thats even the main reason he goes back to Afghanistan in the first place. When Rahim Khan calls he does not mention anything about the boy or even Hassan, all he says is that he knows how he can redeem himself and Amir jumps at the opportunity. Eventually Amir saves the child after battling the Taliban and leads Sohrab to safety. Amir could have left the child in a safe orphanage in Pakistan and go back to his home with Soraya. Thats all the Rahim Khan asked him to do and it would have cleared his consious. Regardless as Amir gets to know Sohrab he decides to take him into his own home to ensure safety. I am sure that Amir is aware of the responsibilities that come with taking care of a child, especially one that has been through so much while still so young. He doesn't give up when the U.S embassy refuses to let Sohrab go back with him to America and he didn't give up when Sohrab tried to commit suicide. Amir was only asked to get him out of Kabul, but he didn't stop after that. I believe that there could have been a part of Amir that did this for his own personal reasons; he couldn't have children, so why not take Sohrab? Regardless, I continue to believe that Amirs actions were pure. He jumped through hoops to get this child back to his home in America, and never gave up on him once they were there. Amir genually cares for this child and will continue to do everything possible to make him feel like he has found a safe environment to live in.
