Response to chow
That part of the book was sad because as much as Hassan tried to rekindle the connection with Amir, Amir would constantly reject him. It's depressing because Hassan didn't do anything wrong and was in fact the victim of it all. Amir was the one who let his selfishness destroy Hassan and continue to destroy him after pelting him with those fruits, acting rude to him, and eventually causing him to leave the house. Later on in the book, you'll see that Amir's thoughts go back to Hassan at some points because he wonders where Hassan has ended up and that shows true regret. As far as Hassan's loyalty goes, I think that Hassan having not punished Amir was the greatest punishment of all and I think Amir deserved it. If Hassan gave in and let his anger loose, Amir would have his satisfaction and no longer feel guilty. However, now, Amir's guilt just sits at the bottom of his stomach and eats him alive.
