I still hate Amir

This portion of the book explained, somewhat, the reasoning behind Amir allowing Hassan to be raped. Nonetheless, the act was despicable, but we can now see that it had reason behind it. It seems that Amir allowed Hassan to be raped primarily because he believed that if he brought home the winning kite, he would receive Baba’s affections and rid him of his guilt over “killing his mother”. This act, in the end, proved not to be truly worth the benefits it brought for Amir. His father, on one hand, is thrilled with the fact that his son is a kite winner, but Amir is incapable of feeling these same emotions as he is consumed entirely with guilt for his inaction during Hassan’s rape. The friendship of Amir and Hassan comes under question here. Amir seems to always be trying to expose a “bad” side of some sorts of Hassan. A side that, realistically, Hassan does not seem to have. Amir goes as far as to throw a fruit at Hassan in order to get him to retaliate to “punish” him for not doing anything during the rape. Hassan, obviously does nothing, and the distinction between the two friends is made even more clear. Hassan is a great friend and an overall strong and good person. Amir. on the other hand, is a little prick. He is weak and pathetic and is probably the worst friend that I have ever heard of. When Hassan admits to stealing the money and the watch, it sheds light on another example of how good of a friend he is as he is willing to sacrifice himself, again. Amir, on the other hand could not even protect Hassan during a rape, so needless to say, he is the worst person in this book. Another example of Amir’s idiocy is when he watched Hassan serving drinks to Assef, the boy who he watched rape Hassan, and does absolutely nothing. He easily could have told his father or told anybody, but once again chooses to remain silent, because that is who he is, a boy without a voice. Honestly, I don’t even think he deserves one.
