I have got to agree with Jose. There is something missing between Amir and Baba, although Baba has finally shown true appreciation and love toward Amir. I feel like Amir cannot mentally get away from his experiences with Hassan. Hassan was the only good and positive person in Amir's life, yet he threw him away. His experiences have conditioned himself to not feel completely satisfied with the good things in his life.
When Amir was a child, he won the kite tournament in honor of his father and expected love and happiness in his life, regardless of any of the preceding events. His experience left his life stale and poor which is why he cannot relish every opportunity with the close people in his life. Although he finally has reached that love and happiness from his father, Baba, he still cannot believe that his father truthfully loves him, due to the experience with him earlier.
Again, I agree with Jose. I don't think that Amir will ever fully get over the guilt he put upon himself with Hassan. It's funny what we do. We tend to shy away from the idea of getting out of our comfort zones because it is too hard to get out of our comfort zones. With a little extra effort, Amir probably would have gone out of his comfort zone, and ultimately would have either stopped the raping, told Baba about the raping, and would have been sympathetic to Hassan, rather than putting the guilt on himself and staying in his comfort zone.
