I thought that it was interesting
how Jose commented on the fact that even though Baba is now proud of Amir,
there still seems to be something missing for Amir. While I was reading all I
could think about was Baba and Amir at Amir’s high schools graduation. Baba was
finally proud of Amir, he could probably burst with pride. Nevertheless, Amir
was happy but at the same time he was not entirely happy. He had finally gotten
the pride he wanted and it still was not enough. This made me go back to what
happened with Hassan. I wonder if Amir believed that allowing Hassan to lose
his innocence was worth the amount of joy that he received from having his
father be proud of him.
I hadn’t originally seen Amir as
acting like an adult once they moved to the US but now that Jose mentioned it,
it seems accurate. He (Amir) has stopped being the whiny and entitled rich kid
that he acted like in Afghanistan. He has started to take some responsibility
and he has even begun to take care for his father. Despite his responsibility,
I am heavily bothered by the fact that it took him so long to grow a pair and
be the man that he is supposed to be. A move to a different country and a loss
of his social class should not have been the catalyst in his maturation
process. He should have matured long ago and avoided Hassan’s loss of innocence
while he was at it.
